CALL TO ACTION
In a few days, Governor Crist will be appointing a new Justice to the Florida Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is vitally important for our members. For example, it was the Supreme Court which ruled that deputy sheriffs should have collective bargaining rights, a landmark case for PBA and its members. The Supreme Court also has a lot of say in whether the death penalty is meted out.
Of all the candidates under consideration for appointment, Judge Alan Lawson is the one who most reflects our views—especially when it comes to law and order issues. By background, temperament, and ability, he is by far the most qualified to service on the Supreme Court.
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE
We ask you to let Governor Crist know that Judge Alan Lawson is the choice of law enforcement and correctional officers. We urge you to act now!
Your action is critical.

Law Enforcement Exemption for Driver License Residential Address Requirement
As originally proposed, Homeland Security would have required officers to use their home address on their driver’s license. Many officers now use their agency address in lieu of the home address. PBA appealed to Division of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Electra Bustle, she agreed with our position, researched the issue, and had the following memo sent out to correct the situation. As a result of this, law enforcement, correctional, and correctional probation officers can continue to use their agency address for their driver’s license. Members need to follow the guidelines in the memo. Our thanks to Director Bustle for addressing this pressing concern in such a timely fashion.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- A Hollywood police officer killed in fiery crash Saturday night has been identified.Officer Alex Del Rio was a nine-year veteran of the force. He was killed when his vehicle slammed into a tree on the 7000 block of Sheridan Street and burst into flames."The fire was going up to the top of the tree and stuff," said Luis Garcia, who saw the accident. "It looked like the gentleman was still in the car. The only car on scene was a Charger. It had just pulled up and the cop was running towards it, but there wasn't much he could do. The car was covered in flames already." Police said that at about 8:40 p.m. Del Rio had completed a traffic stop on Sheridan Street. A few minutes later, he was back on patrol when he saw a car possibly speeding eastbound on Sheridan Street. Del Rio attempted to stop the vehicle but "took evasive action" to avoid hitting a taxi cab. That cab driver is cooperating with police and is considered a witness in the incident.Del Rio joined the Hollywood Police Department as a part-time Community Service Aide in February 1996. He then went on to become a full-time police officer in April 1999."He was a very good officer, very energetic person, always positive and a young bright officer," said Police Chief Chadwick Wagner. "It's going to be a tragic loss for the city of Hollywood. Very tragic."

3-10-08 - Wagner appointed Hollywood police chief
12:13 PM EDT, March 10, 2008
HOLLYWOOD - Scratch "interim" off his title: the job of Hollywood Police Chief officially belongs to Chadwick Wagner, who's held the position on an acting basis since November.
The city manager made the selection official and permanent Monday morning.
The police department also on Monday launched a third Crime Suppression Unit, which will be staffed by seven officers dedicated to fighting street level crime and tackling crime trends throughout the city.Proposals like that, along with Wagner's ability to increase police presence on the streets without increasing costs, impressed City Manager Cameron Benson and confirmed his belief that Wagner should get the job, said Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey.
"In just a few short months, Chief Wagner and his command staff have already been instrumental in making personnel changes and implementing redeployment strategies to save money while putting more officers on our streets," said Benson in an e-mailed statement. "I am very pleased with Chief Wagner's leadership of the department. He's taking it in the right direction."
